Geography of Bandama River

Bandama River is the longest river of ivory cost or Cote d’Ivoire. Ivory Coast comes in West Africa—on its south coast. Yamoussoukro, the capital of Ivory Coast or Cote d’Ivoire, locates adjacent to the Banndama River. There are two major or main tributaries of this river.  One of them is the red Banndama or Marahoue. And the other is the NZi. The Banndama River flows on a vast area of the country, and it covers almost half of the total surface area of the state.

The river rises in the northern uplands as white Banndama.  Then the river drains southward for 800 kilometers or 497 miles and then enters into the Gulf of Guinea and also into the Tagba Lagoon, which is located close to Grand-Lahou. The Banndama River also passes through the kossou lake, which is a huge man-made lake. This lake came into being in the year 1973, with the construction of the kossou dam in the Kossou region.

Bandama River’s Role in Economy

Economically, it added great value to the economy of the country. At kossou there is a hydroelectric plant that exists exactly to the north of that confluence with a Marahoue. So, this plant supplies power to Cote d’Ivoire (ivory cost). Kossou is the place and site for the largest dam in the state. It is also a suitable site for main agricultural projects like fishery projects. Now, let’s talk about the Tagba Lagoon where shipments are taking place for various items. The items include timber and manganese. These items are shipped coastwise from Tagba Lagoon and from the lower section of the river. At the lower section, there is an Asagny Canal through which shipment takes place to Abidjan for the purpose of exportation. The navigation of the Banndama River in the upstream direction is possible only for approximately fifty-six kilometers or 35 miles from Grand-Lahou.
